  12. Anyone know the story on this?  Locally the price on USR Sporster 33.6K
  13. internal modems has dropped to $149 (Computer City), and when I installed
  14. one for a friend I found much to my great surprise that the Sportster now
  15. has a totally different chipset and datapump, and bears no relation to
  16. the older Sporster/Courier internals.

  18. The previous iternation of the Sporster had the same hardware and chipset
  19. as the Courier internals; the only difference was the contents of the 
  20. firmware and whether a Flash ROM (Courier) or a regular PLCC ROM socket
  21. (Sportster) was installed.  I'd previously compared these two circuit
  22. boards, the chipset and board itself were identical, with mask space for
  23. both the Courier's Flash ROM and for the Sporsters PLCC ROM socket on both.

  25. But now the "new" $149 Sporster 33.6K internals I've been seeing have a 
  26. tiny little Texas Instruments chipset instead of the big NEC DSP, datapump,
  27. and Intel microcontroller.

  29. Unless this new TI chipset is a condensed-mask version of the old chipset
  30. (something I highly doubt, given the TI's dimunitive size and far, far 
  31. fewer external leads than the previous Courier/Sportster's huge DSP), it
  32. seems to me we're basically looking at a totally different modem!  The
  33. old reliability/performance/connectivity benchmarks would no longer apply
  34. to the new design, and it would have to be retested.

  36. Anyone seen any such tests on the new design?  Anyone have the 
  37. spec sheets for the tiny new integrated TI chipset that's now used on these
  38. newer, cheaper Sporster 33.6K's?
